The global PV market is rapidly shifting towards n‑type modules, driven by efficiency gains and long‑term cost advantages. This analysis provides an overview of the 2023 market landscape, including the market share of key wafer sizes and types, and examines the adoption strategies of the top five manufacturers with a particular focus on n‑type technologies. While larger and evolving wafer formats show performance and cost potential, they also introduce increased complexity across the manufacturing value chain—from ingot and wafer production through to cell processing and module design.
Our assessment highlights that manufacturing challenges vary significantly by wafer size, impacting equipment compatibility, process stability, yields, and module design constraints. A structured customer value analysis was conducted using a transparent methodology to evaluate these trade‑offs, comparing cost, performance, flexibility, and supply‑chain robustness. The results show that cost differences between leading wafer size options are relatively small when considered over the full value chain.
Given this limited cost spread and the dynamic market environment, RCT recommends following prevailing market trends and selecting solutions supported by a diverse and resilient supply chain. In particular, emerging markets are strongly advised to prioritise standardisation, as this significantly reduces conversion costs and avoids productivity losses associated with frequent production line changeovers for different products.
At the same time, technology and sizing decisions must remain case‑specific. Each investment must be evaluated based on the targeted steps of the value chain (ingot, wafer, cell and/or module), sourcing strategies for feedstock and materials, the requirements of the final customer, and the selected cell technology. A balanced, market‑aligned approach combining standardisation with case‑by‑case optimisation offers the most robust path for competitive n‑type manufacturing.
