PV cell technology follows innovation cycles of approximately 5–7 years. Given the longer planning and ramp‑up timelines typical for Western manufacturing facilities, future upgradeability must be a core design consideration from the outset. The industry is expected to move beyond TOPCon towards TOPCon Back Contact (TBC) cells as the next technological evolution. While multiple upgrade pathways exist, they vary significantly in terms of capacity impact, space requirements, utilities, and overall complexity. A transition to TBC in particular entails substantially higher CAPEX and process complexity. Cost‑of‑ownership analysis indicates that while it is most efficient to install only the initially required utilities, proactively reserving additional space during the initial factory design markedly reduces costs and risks associated with future upgrades. RCT therefore recommends reserving sufficient space today to enable cost‑effective and timely future technology upgrades, particularly towards TBC.
